My first month as a Creative Director

My first month as creative director was a crazy month!

I don’t have a marketing degree, but I wrote an online marketing proposal and I got the job. Instead of having just an architect role on the nonprofit I’m working for, now I’m also in charge of marketing, image, and branding; it is a lot to take, but nothing that a good schedule can’t manage.

My first month as Creative Director

I’m not sure if I want to stay in the country for more than a year, but the project is inspiring, and someday I want to start a nonprofit as well; better start learning now, right?

This first month, I hired a new community manager. She is aligned with our values, she doesn’t have the experience I need, but I think hiring someone who’s really committed to the message I want to share is more important.

Team first

The heavy stuff is re-writing the whole marketing strategy; web, social media, branding, presentations, and fundraising.

A lot! The only thing I’m struggling with is making sure my boss will let me lead; he’s used to handling all, so It seems it is hard for him to get used to delegating. But I guess with time; I’ll gain his trust.

About the marketing strategy

First, I wrote a brand guide where I put all the values and brand purpose clearly, so it’s crystal clear who we are and why we do what we do.

It’s important because after an internal marketing audit I sensed there’s a blurry purpose inside the team, and you know the Telephone game; eventually the message could get too messy.

The good news is that it isn’t hard to write an inspiring message or verbalize our purpose as a nonprofit.

Marketing strategy

Now I want to refresh the graphic line for the brand, I can’t change a lot of it because it’s an international nonprofit, so I’ll just make it look fresh.

Then I’ll redesign the webpage so it works as a giant landing page where I’ll inspire, give value and ask for action; the blog won’t be that visible, but it will help a lot with social media content.

In the meantime, I’ll focus on social media, making sure all the platforms are coherent, focusing more on relevant content, and improving our productivity.

My biggest challenge now is the Christmas campaign, mainly because we are already finishing October and my boss wants to launch it yesterday. So wish me luck with it because I don’t want to mess this up!
